What Are Business Operations?

Business operations are activities a company engages in on a daily basis, such as producing and selling its products, generating revenue, administrative functions, and marketing. 

Businesses run well and succeed based on their daily activities, input, and output. As a result, most companies day-to-day business operations may look similar, with few distinct differences based on the type of business a person runs. For instance, the daily business operations of a chef may be identical to how a doctor may run their business, with similarities such as marketing their business and doing administrative work such as answering emails and phone calls. But, there are also distinct differences, such as the type of clients they cater to, their services, and their product production

Examples Of Daily Business Operations

These business operations help your business run smoothly and expand; these daily operations are similar from one business to another. Still, business operations may differ significantly from one company to the other depending on the type of company you run. 

Marketing: Marketing is the activity a company undertakes to promote the buying or selling a product or service. Also, marketing may include advertising, content creation, storytelling, email marketing, webinars, or trade shows. 

Sales: In general business operations, sales refer to a transaction where currency or value is exchanged for the ownership of goods, products, or services. In this case, your company’s marketing team creates a sales funnel through an advertisement that helps put products and services in front of your ideal clients, making it easy for them to purchase your goods or services to help solve their pain points

Supply Chain Management: Supply chain management is the management of the flow of goods, data, and finances related to a product or services, from the procurement of raw materials to the delivery of the finished product to the marketplace. 

Accounting: Accounting in your business is the process of collecting and analyzing financial information for your company. An individual, a business, or an accounting team can do it. The information they gather helps you to understand your company’s business activities and create a financial report.  

Customer Service: Customer service is the support you offer your customers – both before they buy your products or services, and that helps them to have an easy and enjoyable experience with your brand. In addition, your customer service may include the following:

  • Helping your clients solve issues.
  • Teaching them how to use your products.
  • Answering clients’ phone calls and emails.  

Administrative Work

Inventory: Inventory in your business includes finished units of a product being held for sale, unfinished works in process, and any raw material used to finish the goods. In addition, inventory is recorded as a current asset. Also, your inventory is often one of your company’s most valuable assets. In short, your inventory is the accounting of items, component parts, and raw materials that are used to produce them.   

Logistics: Logistics describes the process of coordinating resources and moving materials, products, inventory, and equipment from one location to a desired destination. In short, logistics is the overall process of managing how resources are acquired, stored, and transported to a final destination. 

Administrative Work: Administrative work in your business consists of the performance or management of the business operation. Also, it includes overseeing and supervising your business operations.

New Product Development: Product development is a series of steps that include the conceptualization, design, development, and marketing of newly created or newly rebranded goods and services. In short, product development consists of a project’s entire journey from its initial idea to its market release. 

Procurement: Procurement is the process of securing necessary goods and services for your business. Also, procurement involves every activity involved in obtaining the goods and services a company needs to support its daily operations. Again, procurement is the act of sourcing and purchasing goods, services, or raw materials for a business from vendors.
