Origin Of French Toast

We can trace French toast back to ancient Rome, where people created a recipe for bread soaked in milk and beaten eggs, then fried and served with honey, as described in a Roman cookbook called Apicius

In addition, similar foods were eaten in Europe during the Middle Ages. Also, the dish was first documented in England during the reign of Henry V and referred to by its French name, pain perdu.

Furthermore, French toast made its first appearance in the United States in the 1700s, introduced by an innkeeper named Joseph French in Albany, New York.

In addition, we know the name of this dish by a variety of names, including German toast, eggy bread, French-fried bread, gypsy toast, Poor Knights of Windsor, Spanish toast, nun’s toast, and pain perdu, which means “lost bread” in French.

Difference Between French Toast And Bread Pudding

French toast and bread pudding are similar because they use bread as the main ingredient. However, there are some critical differences between the two:

  • You can typically make French toast with slices of bread soaked in a mixture of eggs and milk or cream, then fried until golden brown. Also, it is usually served as a breakfast dish.
  • Bread pudding combines bread with a custard mixture of eggs, milk or cream, sugar, and spices. Next, the mixture is then baked until set. Also, it can be served as a dessert or breakfast dish.

So while both dishes use bread as the main ingredient and involve soaking it in a liquid mixture, the cooking method and ingredients used differ.
