To all my natural 4c hair sisters, I feel your pain when it comes to managing our hair. My backstory started in 2015 when I decided to do the big chop because I realized my hair had stopped growing as in my hair was a little bit past my shoulders and was not growing past my shoulders. Plus, I realized that the relaxers I was using to straighten my hair were damaging my scalp.

Plus, I would see new hair growth every two weeks, which means I would have to relax or use a straightening iron on my roots – these factors were harming my hair. But for some reason, my hair was very resilient upon all the harmful hair treatments I put my hair through. I remember when I will relax my hair and color it two days later (this is dangerous). I will not advise anyone to relax and color their hair in the same week. The experts recommend waiting two weeks after relaxing to color your hair.

I couldn’t keep up with my hair anymore, so I decided to chop off my relaxed hair and regrow my natural hair. A little part of me wondered if my hair will ever grow back. But, six years later, my natural hair has grown, and it’s almost waist length.

If you have 4c hair, then you know that this hair type can be very dry. And because of that, you have to keep it moisturized and hydrated at all times. Our hair types experience dryness because of their intricate design – 4c hair is very coily and tightly curled and tends to shrink up to 75%. Most often, 4c hair is very low porous, meaning that products have a hard time penetrating the hair follicles, so they sit on top of the hair, creating product build-up. Therefore, I recommend that you do a monthly clarifying shampooing – my favorite shampoo that I use is VO5 Kiwi Lime Squeeze Clarifying Shampoo.

How To Soften And Manage 4c Hair

As I have said subsequently, 4c hair is very drying and can be tough to manage. There have been times when I wanted to texlax my hair, but also, I wasn’t looking to put any chemicals in my hair. Also, my hair is very picky and does not take kindly to products that other girls use with success when it comes to softening the hair. I have tried it all, from top brands to drugstore brands – I have also tried oils to help moisturize my hair, but nothing worked.

Prayer Works

One day, as I contemplated whether to soften my hair chemically, I prayed and asked God to help me find products that will help soften my hair because I did not want to put any chemicals into my natural hair.

The next day, I went to my local beauty shop, and as I strolled by every natural hair product, I was hoping to find something for my hair. I then got to the children’s section, and I abruptly stopped – I saw a collection of children’s hair products, and my eyes immediately gazed at the Kids Originals By Africa’s Best. Generally, I was reluctant to buy it because in my mind, what does a grown woman like me have to do using children’s hair products – but I went ahead and made a purchase.

I decided to buy their Detangling Moisturizing Hair Lotion to start with and see if it will soften my hair. And what do you know, upon using it, my hair melted in my hand and two days later, my hair was still soft. So I decided then to buy their shampoo and hair conditioner. My goodness, the shampoo is a detangler and cleanser in one. Gone were those days when I would spend hours detangling my hair, with this detangling shampoo, I detangle my hair within minutes.

The shampoo is very moisturizing, and my hair stays soft and hydrated weeks after using the shampoo. I love their conditioner, it is protein enriched and made with herbal extracts and vitamins. It also works to strengthen weak hair, damaged, and over-processed hair.

Other Hair Products That Help Me To Manage My Hair

As I said earlier, my hair is very picky, and because of that, I have very limited hair products I can use for my hair, including oils. The only oil I use for my hair is argan oil, specifically Creme Of Nature Argan Oil; even though it is a heat protectant oil, that is what my hair likes. I also use Aussie Miracle Moist Intense Hydration Oil – I mix both oils and use them for my hair. As a result, my hair stays hydrated and soft at all times. I use water, moisturizing lotion, and oils to refresh my hair, and my hair is soft all day and manageable.

That’s my secret to soft and manageable hair; I do not use any expensive brand-name hair products for my hair. If you are looking for new products to try for your hair for hydration and softness – give these products a try.

Let me know how it goes.
